The desire to control another comes from a mistaken view of symbiosis, wherein we regard the other as if they were part of us, and therefore believe they ought to act like us. As we mature out of symbiosis, we need to embrace oneness, which allows us to see the other as a being similar to us, and therefore worthy of following their own path just like ourselves.

I believe that failure to grasp our oneness, while clinging to symbiosis, is the root of the whole world’s divisiveness. Consequently, our hostility toward one another has long been aided and abetted by fallacious teachings about what makes for effective parenting. Children who ought to have been set free feel smothered, while children who desperately need to experience oneness with their parents feel abandoned. It’s crucial to get the dance of separateness and togetherness right—at least as far as possible, since none of us gets it completely right.
